Being a female elite orienteer: A comparison of Sweden and France

(Shutterstock/Rawpixel.com)

Noan Bouvier’s study examines the performance and articulation of gender identities among elite female orienteers in Sweden and France, within the context of enduring gender inequalities. Despite orienteering’s reputation as a gender-neutral sport, it remains influenced by societal norms. Employing feminist theories, particularly Judith Butler’s concept of gender performativity, the research delves into how female orienteers navigate and challenge traditional gender roles both in their athletic pursuits and digital self-representations. Book Reviews

The Politics of Football, by Christos Kassimeris

(Shutterstock/DELBO ANDREA)

In his book The Politics of Football (Routledge), Christos Kassimeris examines the deep connections between football and politics and explains what those relationships can tell us about sport and wider society. With the game occupying a preeminent place on the world sporting stage, this book argues that the political significance of football has never been greater. And our reviewer Mads Skauge fully agrees. Football is important. Football is politics. He read the book as an introduction to football politics, and as such it is highly recommendable. (Review in English, published 240521.)

Black Cyclists: The Race for Inclusion, by Robert J. Turpin

Kitty Knox and Marshall (Major) Taylor

In his new book Black Cyclists: The Race for Inclusion (University of Illinois Press), Robert J. Turpin sheds light on the contributions of Black cyclists from the sport’s early days through the cementing of Jim Crow laws during the Progressive Era. We’re pleased to publish this review of Turpin’s book by historian Duncan R. Jamieson, leading cycling scholar as well as having a research focus on the role of race and racism in American society. Our reviewer is highly appreciative of Turpin’s effort, though not as optimistic about the future for Blacks in American cycling. (Review in English, published 240522.)

The Lance Armstong of the Premier League, by Helge Chr. Pedersen

Today the Premier League is decided. Arsenal are two points behind Manchester City and City must drop points at the Etihad against West Ham for us to claim our first PL title since 2003/04. So, in other words it requires a miracle if we are to be crowned champions. But as most people know, there are (according to the charges) 115 reasons why City will win the League for a sixth time in seven seasons. These 115 reasons have transformed the club from an also-ran to the world’s richest club through various forms of (alleged 115) breaches of the league’s financial rules. These (alleged) 115 violations have transformed an anonymous and gray club, which throughout most of its history has been a mid-table team at best, into the world’s best club, almost overnight.
