Dear all,
Apologies for the meagre output during the past week, the result of a combination of meagre input and the need to put publishing aside for other tasks, specifically, in this case, two things: finding newly published books of interest for idrottsforum.org to review, and ordering review copies of them from their respective publishers; and unpacking and registering new books delivered to the editorial offices of the Forum and finding suitable reviewers for them, reviewers that both are willing and have time to review them for us. This latter task is by a long chalk the more arduous of the two. The result of our efforts wasn’t too bad though, eight reviewers – in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the UK – will be receiving a book in the coming days. This kind of work will be going on this week as well, albeit to a lesser extent.
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,
Kjell Eriksson

Netball Australia should and can do better with First Nations players
Although netball is highly popular among Australian girls, it also has a history of failing to retain and protect First Nations players. In this article, Professor Jim McKay shows that not only does Netball Australia fail to attract First Nations talents at the grassroots level and promote them to the national teams, but in the few cases that they do they fail to include and protect them and keep them at that level. Book Reviews
Winter’s Children: A Celebration of Nordic Skiing, by Ryan Rodgers
Ryan Rodgers writes the story of Nordic skiing in the Midwest – its origins and history, its star athletes and races, and its place in the region’s social fabric and the nation’s winter recreation – in Winter’s Children: A Celebration of Nordic Skiing (University of Minnesota Press). Our reviewer, sport historian and skiing scholar Daniel Svensson enjoyed reading Rodgers’ book in spite of its non-academic approach. Rodgers’ blend of oral history with archival sources and personal reflections made reading his prose a pleasure. (Review in English published 230124.)
Changing on the Fly: Hockey through the voices of South Asian Canadians, by Courtney Szto
Courtney Szto’s first book builds on her dissertation from 2018 and is entitled Changing on the Fly: Hockey through the voices of South Asian Canadians (Rutgers University Press). For this book she was awarded the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport Outstanding Book Award 2021. Leading Swedish ice hockey historian Tobias Stark has read Szto’s book on our behalf, and he is impressed by her critical analysis of Canadian ice hockey and the lack of intersectional justice in the game and its organizations.
