Beyond the Finishing Line: Sports and Human Rights
This article by Constantino Pereira Martins, Luísa Ávila da Costa, Marcos Panciera and Paulo Antunes explores the intersection of sports and human rights, illustrating how sports have evolved into a critical component of society, overcoming the outdated perspective viewing sports as leisure or competitive pursuits, recognizing their role as fundamental rights, reinforced by international frameworks like the Olympic Charter and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. These advancements highlight sports’ capacity to promote physical and mental well-being and social inclusion. (Published in English 250120.
Book Reviews
Football and Diaspora: Connecting Dispersed Communities through the Global Game, by Jeffrey W. Kassing & Sangmi Lee (eds.)
Jeffrey W. Kassing’s and Sangmi Lee’s edited collection Football and Diaspora: Connecting Dispersed Communities through the Global Game (Routledge) examines football (soccer) through the lens of cross-disciplinary diaspora studies. Our reviewer, Norwegian sport sociology professor Hans K. Hognestad, finds that the collection with its wide span of empirical studies of diaspora communities in different corners of the world, negotiating identities through football, is welcome and, arguably, overdue. Handbook of Sport and International Development, by Nico Schulenkorf, Jon Welty Peachey, Ramón Spaaij & Holly Collison-Randall (eds.)

With sport sustaining a prominent place in international development policymaking, discourse and delivery, the collected volume Handbook of Sport and International Development (Edward Elgar) investigates the role that different sport initiatives – from community-focused projects to large-scale events – can play across a great variety of development contexts. Our reviewers Derrick Charway and Umair Asif are appreciative of the comprehensive approach and they find the critical stance vital to combat the narratives about the “inherent purity and goodness of sport” (Coakley).
