That Was The Week That Was,
    January 19–25, 2026

    Dear all,

So, the first week out of the way. A bit rusty, confesses this editor, a month since last full week, and a year since handling all the administrative and technical to-dos that come with a new calendar year.
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
And remember, if you’re not already hooked up to one of the social media outlets that we utilize, for now they are Facebook, Bluesky, LinkedIn and X, you’re missing quite a lot of information from idrottsforum.org that never appears on the website. So, if that is the case, check out, by clicking on the names, our Facebook, Bluesky, LinkedIn and X accounts.
    Have a great week,
    Kjell Eriksson

Can health literacy promote physical activity?

The ability of people to access, understand and apply information about healthy physical activity, i.e., their health literacy, has long interested My Blomberg in her work as a health educator. This interest has arisen against the background that insufficient physical activity continues to be a significant public health problem, despite extensive societal efforts to promote physical activity, research efforts, and an increased recognition of physical activity as both a treatment and preventive method in healthcare. This is the subject of My’s doctoral studies in sport sciences at Malmö University. (Published in Swedish 260119.

Local histories of women’s football offer new perspectives on the game

Dick, Kerr Ladies,, the most frequently mentioned football team in this book.

Histories of Women’s Football in Britain and Ireland, edited by Fiona Skillen, Helena Byrne and Gary James (Peter Lang Publishing) brings together a range of researchers to explore the growth and development of the women’s game in Britain and Ireland. Hans Bolling has read a book that sheds new light on a phenomenon for which interest has increased significantly during the 21st century and also highlights forgotten and/or ignored pioneers. Reading the book from cover to cover it may seem repetitive, but that also means that each chapter can be read on its own. (Review in English, published 260121.)

Research methods put into practice – theory, cases and practical guidance

Now in its thirteenth year, A. J. Veal’s and Simon Darcy’s Research Methods in Sport Studies and Sport Management: A Practical Guide (Routledge) is still considered an essential companion for any sport-related degree course. Klara Boije af Gennäs explains why by noting the pedagogical design – test questions, case studies, etc – as well as its both theoretical and practical orientation. She is less happy with the insufficient elaborations on qualitative methods and the unfortunate placing of references. (Review in English, published 260122.)

How baseball (fiction) explains Trump, by Erkki Vettenniemi

Image source: Donald Trump playing baseball, Shrapnel 1962 (New York Military Academy Yearbook)

We now know that the current (and greatest, according to him) president of the United States of America is not only a great golf player and the supreme authority of American football. In his youth, he excelled as a batter and could easily have become a Major League player in the great American pastime. Baseball, or rather baseball-related literature, also happens to shed sensational light on the origins of his idiosyncratic approach to more serious issues, including international relations.  (Published in English 260122.)
