Book Reviews
The Future of Motorsports: Business, Politics and Society, by Hans Erik Næss & Simon Chadwick (eds.)

The Future of Motorsports: Business, Politics and Society, edited by Hans Erik Næss and Simon Chadwick (Routledge) takes stock of the position of motorsport in the 21st century and considers how it will continue to influence sport business, politics, and society in the future. Alex Twitchen knows a thing or two about motor racing, and he has read this “valuable contribution to the academic study of motorsport” with great interest, while also noting some of the conundrums involved in trying to predict the future. (Review in English, published 240220.)
Football and Fascism: The Politics of Popular Culture in Portugal, by Rahul Kumar

Rahul Kumar’s Football and Fascism: The Politics of Popular Culture in Portugal (De Gruyter) explores the political tensions between the nationalization of sports envisaged by the Portuguese “New State” and the integration of national football in a globalized urban popular culture. Torbjörn Andersson’s disappointment at the lack of a deeper analysis of fascism’s relationship to the triumphant Portuguese football of the 1960s does not prevent him from being impressed by Kumar’s study with its rich empirical details. (Review in English, published 240223.)
