That Was The Week That Was,
    December 12–18, 2022

    Dear all,

    🎵🎵 It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere I go🎵 🎵
Yes, it’s that time of the year, and for idrottsforum.org and its editor it means slowing down a bit, albeit not to standstill level. After this week, during which we will publish at least two or three book reviews, there will be no original texts published until mid-January. There will however be presentations of new issues of scholarly journals, Call for Papers to conferences, special issues, anthologies and what have you that might pop up.
Last week the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
As you will notice, our blogger Katarina Schenker has tested, as many others lately, the new chatbot from the Musk universe by posing questions about sport didactics. It’s all in Swedish, but do try the Google translate function, it’s actually getting better all the time. And the bot’s responses to Katarina’s questions are interesting reading.
Naturally enough, I just had to have a go myself, by asking how to wish all of you subscribers a merry Christmas:
Wishing all our subscribers a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We hope you have a chance to relax and enjoy some of your favorite sports during the holiday season. Thanks for being a part of our community.

Bortom fysisk bildning inom idrott och hälsa [School physical education – beyond physical activity] by Filip Fröberg

Filip Fröberg’s article aims to map and explain the psychological and social impact that the school subject of sports and health has in addition to physical activity. To illustrate this, Piaget’s theories on cognitive development and play are applied. In addition, a summary of a degree project that carried out an intervention study on motor development is used. Furthermore, how motor skills, constructivism, educational science and sports relate to each other is highlighted. (Published in Swedish 221213. English abstract available

The Art of Tifo: Identity, Representation, and Performing Fandom in Football/Soccer by Jeffrey W. Kassing & Lindsey J. Meân

In The Art of Tifo: Identity, Representation, and Performing Fandom in Football/Soccer (Peter Lang Publishing), Jeffrey W. Kassing & Lindsey J. Meân examine the history and evolution of tifos, and their social significance for clubs, places, and communities. Sara Karlén, whose PhD project deals with tifos in the Swedish supporter culture, is our reviewer, and she found much to like in this timely and educational contribution to the body of literature about the tifo phenomenon. Sport in Aotearoa New Zealand: Contested Terrain by Damion Sturm & Roslyn Kerr (eds.)

Damion Sturm’s and Roslyn Kerr’s edited collection Sport in Aotearoa New Zealand: Contested Terrain (Routledge) investigates the sporting traditions, successes, systems, “terrains” and contemporary issues that underpin sport in New Zealand, also known by its Māori name of Aotearoa. Our reviewer is Rod Philpot, who enjoyed reading the book and gained new understandings of sport, sportspeople and sporting and recreational activities that are occurring in his own backyard. AI och idrottsdidaktik [AI and sports didactic] by Katarina Schenker

In the last week, the media has drawn attention to the fact that it is now possible for anyone to write credible academic texts with the help of AI. At the universities there is now a concern that it is AI texts that will be examined rather than student works. At https://chat.openai.com/ you can chat with a robot developed by the company OpenAI, founded by, among others, Elon Musk. Of course I have to try it. What can this tool mean for our way of perceiving and managing knowledge? Do I need to change my course details? I wrote to the bot and examined what responses I received.  (Published in Swedish 221215.)
