Big waves, big questions: Philosophical implications in the surfing experience

Surf is probably one of the steadiest-growing sports in the world, maybe because surfing isn’t just about sports or physical activity. It’s about a culture, a newborn tribe, and a collective identity that thrives within the strength of a global outdoor community. Constantino Pereira Martins’ article tries to follow surf’s preliminary philosophical questions, between being, time, body, and space, but also to establish an unbreakable bond towards phenomenology and spirituality, towards a sacrificial athletic religious experience. Book Reviews
Women and Martial Art in Japan, by Kate Sylvester

Kate Sylvester’s Women and Martial Art in Japan is based on extensive original research originally for her doctoral thesis. She examines the practice by women in a university sport setting of kendo, the Japanese martial art. Our reviewer is Anna Kavoura, with extensive experiences in combat sports, and she is highly appreciative of Sylvester’s study, which “offers profound insights into broader themes of gender dynamics, cultural identity, and ethnographic methodology in [a] non-Western cultural context”. (Review in English, published 230516.)
Sport, Globalisation and Identity: New Perspectives on Regions and Nations, by Jim O’Brien, Russell Holden & Xavier Ginesta (eds.)

The edited collection Sport, Globalisation and Identity: New Perspectives on Regions and Nations by Jim O’Brien, Russell Holden & Xavier Ginesta (Routledge) explores the complex interrelationships between nations, regions and states in the landscape of contemporary international sport, with a particular focus on identity. Christer Ericsson, a self-confessed anthology skeptic, had some reservations while reading but concluded that this anthology had done its job, presenting interesting new studies in a way as to create a coherent whole. Å trene rumpa og bite seg i halen? [Exercising your ass and biting your tail?], by Mads Skauge
Recently, I was interviewed by Norwegian Public Radio in a case about butt training being a trend in gyms. Exercising the bum is neither sensational nor objectionable in itself, after all it forms a significant part of our musculature. What is thought-provoking is that butt training is increasingly done in isolation, partly due to the fitness centers’ marketing of this type of training. And from a market point of view, it seems strategically sensible to present your fitness center as a place where you can figuratively give your buttocks a firming lift, as, for example, a fitness center in Bodø has cleared space for a “Booty Zone”… (Published in Norwegian 2404704.
