This international meeting aims to elucidate the many ways that city dwellers have striven to appropriate rivers and riverbanks for leisure purposes from the 19h century to today. The goal-perspective approach to the conference will be a pluridisciplinary task, seeking to understand the complex circumstances that intersect with several areas and disciplines.

For the 17th ISHPES Congress, researchers are invited to submit papers related to “Sites of sport in history” – these words being taken in their widest sense. Papers are expected to meet listed sub-themes or one of three specific symposia. Abstract submission deadline is January 31st!

The organisers are keen to include as wide a range of papers on any aspect of sport and leisure history as possible and they encourage both independent and institutionally-affiliated researchers, including postgraduate students, to present their work.

To mark the ongoing exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery: Playing for Scotland: The Making of Modern Sport, we are teaming up to present a one-day conference on Scottish sport’s historic and contemporary relationship with the arts, broadly defined.
