The Symposium will aim to illuminate and nuance the relationship between gender and power within the transnational regulatory system that governs football (with FIFA at its helm); to identify specific gendered implications of existing governance structures, rules and procedures; and to consider innovative ideas for feminist reform or revolution.

The organizers are interested in bringing together scholars who are interested in issues of gender equality in sport. We welcome submissions that address a variety of gender issues such as sexuality, body, identity, gender-based discrimination (including harassment and abuse), LGBTIQ+ experiences, as well as practices of exclusion and marginalization in sport, physical activity, and school physical education.

Over the course of its development mountaineering/alpinism has experienced an outstanding linking with male values and concepts of (heroic) masculinity. As a result women mountaineers and their achievements were marginalized or downright disregarded. These lectures will be published in a special edition of the “International Journal of the History of Sport”.

The Empower Conference combines fresh thinking with the latest research. With a number of keynote speakers, a choice of afternoon “in focus” sessions, plus the release of Women in Sport’s new research into the visibility of women’s sport in the media, this is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to learn, discuss and network with peers from the sports and media sectors.

Founded in 2005, the working group aims for a transnational and interdisciplinary exchange of researchers with an interest in the study of sport and gender. The program of the 11th annual meeting focuses on sexism, discrimination, sexual harassment and violence studies in the field of Physical Education and sport, LGBTQ+, as well as leadership and coaches' perspectives.

Founded in 2005, the group aims for a transnational and interdisciplinary exchange of researchers who have a major interest in the study of sport and gender.

This one day conference will be held on 8th March 2017 as part of the International Womens Day celebrations. The conference will appeal to a range of stakeholders in womens sport from governing bodies, policy makers, sports administrators, sports development roles, education and academics, coaches, participants and anyone interested in developing and promoting sport.

The Institute for Sport, Physical Activity and Leisure is pleased to announce a forthcoming conference to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sheila Scraton’s book, Shaping Up To Womanhood: Gender and Girls’ Physical Education. Keynote speakers include Professor Emerita Sheila Scraton.

This conference will be an opportunity to take our prosopographical perspective further, with an emphasis on figures from these forgotten groups. As this panel is meant to understand the position of women within major sporting institutions, it will welcome biographies, as well as network presentations or collective biographies of women.
