The H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports is proud to announce a virtual conference focused on historical and other humanities-based approaches to the study of physical culture. We define physical culture as “the various activities people have employed over the centuries to strengthen their bodies, enhance their physiques, increase their endurance, improve their health, fight against aging, and become better athletes.”

The Department of Sport Sciences at Malmö university, in collaboration with SVEBI, has the pleasure of inviting the Scandinavian sport science community to a series of digital seminars on November 18–20, 2020. This digital meetup will work as a pre-event for the SVEBI conference that will be hosted at Malmö University on 17–19 November 2021. We see the event as a terrific opportunity for the sport science community to meet – albeit digitally – and exchange experiences.

Rhe 53rd Nordic World Ski Championships will be held in Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region of Germany will be used as an opportunity to hold an international conference on places of memory in skiing and its cultural memory. Following the example of the French cultural scientist Pierre Nora and the term “lieux de memoire”, which he coined, this conference will interpret the concepts of “place” or “memory” in many different ways

This panel discussion reveals more about researchers' experiences when navigating archives, as well as the collection policies related to Olympics/Paralympics of GLAM organisations. There is a broad mix of physical, digitised and born digital resources will be covered in the presentations. The event is hosted by BSSH Chair, Raf Nicholson and moderated by BSSH Secretary Geoff Levett.

This is the first time this conference will take place in České Budějovice. We plan to organise a ’physical’ meeting. However, due to the current circumstances, we also calculate with the possibility of having the conference partly or fully online. The conference will be in English and under the auspices of the Faculty of Theology, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. The spread of COVID-19 has affected everyone’s overall daily and social life. Our duty in securing people’s health and safety became not only the issue for the congress organizer but also all over the world where international participants live. The original idea of ISHPES 2020 was to provide the opportunity to discuss ‘sport history and interdisciplinary relations’ in the year of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Sessions include a keynote from Dr Prashant Kidambi, Blurred Boundaries: Writing the Social History of Sport; panels on Edwardian Sport, Boxing, The Writing of History and Sporting Inequalities; and a roundtable on "The Future of Sports History", featuring Dr Christienna Fryar, Dr Geoff Levett (producer of the Sport In History podcast), Dr Carol Osborne, and Professor Kay Schiller (Editor-in-Chief of Sport in History)

Women tend to be overlooked when it comes to research within sport and exercise. We, therefore, wish to virtually connect individuals from a range of disciplines to ensure that sport and exercise research has a focus on women, especially during COVID-19 and beyond. This conference will be a platform of networking opportunities to connect with others in sport and exercise to boost confidence, training and motivation through knowledge gained via others’ research and experience.

This conference is devoted to discussing historical practices of horsemanship and equestrian sports, their emergence and evolution over centuries and into the present day. The conference is open to papers from all historical periods, and In particular, we encourage the speakers to consider the links between historical and current practices in horsemanship and to inquire into possible tendencies and future developments in equestrian sports.
