Valuable overview of Brazilian women’s football – history and current situation
The Beautiful Game Reimagined: Women’s Soccer in Brazil, edited by Lívia Gonçalves Magalhães, Tiago J. Fernandes Maranhão & Bernardo Buarque De Hollanda (Common Ground) challenges long-held notions of the country’s enduring football heritage by highlighting the influential and rapidly evolving sphere of women’s soccer. Jonny Hjelm finds a few flaws in the editorial work, which are however overshadowed by the strengths: the breadth of the subject, the intersectional perspective and some really good chapters coalesce to create valuable knowledge of women’s football in one of the major football nations.
From individual groundbreaking work to established field of research: The development of humanities and social science engagement with the cultural phenomenon of sport in Sweden
Samhällsidrotten och idrottssamhället. Humanistisk och samhällsvetenskaplig idrottsforskning under 50 år [Sport in society and the society of sports. Humanistic and social science sports research over 50 years] is edited by Tomas Peterson and published as a celebration of 50 years of Swedish sport studies within the social sciences and humanities. We went abroad to find a suitable reviewer – not a Swede but Swedish speaking – and Ansgar Molzberger accepted the cumbersome task of reviewing this 556 page tome. And he did well, we are happy to bring his review to your attention.
Svensk idrottsforskning fyller 50!

The Aristocratic Taste for Sport among Swedish Sport Researchers
In a new peer reviewed article in Scandinavian Sport Studies Forum, Jonny Hjelm presents his penetrating study of Swedish sports scholarship within social sciences and the humanities, 1970–2010. Based on analyses of 77 doctoral theses, Hjelm concludes that the general distaste for competitive sports that is evident, is rooted in leftist anti-market sentiments as well as a glorification of the virtue of play and games.
In defense of serious play
Jonny Hjelm, Professor of History at Umeå University, has a special interest in sport studies – studying sports, and studying sport studies. His Idrott, tävling och allvar: En kritisk granskning av svensk idrottsforskning offers critical analyses of a number of Swedish dissertations on sports and PE.
