Hockey continues to experience reckonings. While some incidents have garnered more media attention than others, questions about hockey’s deeper purpose abound: How might we, individually and collectively, reckon with a history of hockey that has contributed to acts of misogyny, violence, racism, homophobia, classism, and ableism? How might we reckon with realizing our entanglements and vulnerabilities in the context of hockey culture? In what ways are we implicated in narratives of hockey culture?
New Study Examines Media Coverage of the Journey of the Finnish Ice Hockey Club Jokerit in the Russian-led Kontinental Hockey League
A study examining the media coverage of the Finnish ice hockey club Jokerit’s time in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), conducted by doctoral researcher Joakim Särkivuori and senior researcher Antti Laine, both from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, has been published. The study delves into the reporting by the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat during a politically tumultuous time. It considers KHL’s westward expansion efforts as part of Russia’s soft power strategy and explores the nature of the news coverage.
Sport Scholar Profile | Christian Tolstrup Jensen | Malmö University
Christian Tolstrup Jensen, PhD, is a sports historian affiliated with Malmö University where he currently works as a postdoc researcher at the Dept. of Sport Sciences. His current research focuses on sports events, but his interest in sport studies is varied and wide: Danish and Scandinavian sport history ranging from Norwegian ice hockey to Danish football; youth history and culture, and especially the history of the scout movement. An ongoing project revolves around sport events and their role and position in the Nordic countries.

This special issue intends to grasp and analyse the relationship between football and ice hockey, from different angles and perspectives focusing on identity, political ambitions, markets and sponsoring, spectator cultures, city-marketing in relation to sport successes. The basic aim is to detect and investigate differences and similarities in the complex of ‘football versus ice hockey in the European sports landscape’.
Call for Papers | Reaching the Summit: Reimagining the Summit Series in the Canadian Cultural Memory, an Anthology. Call ends April 30, 2021
The proposed collection will explore the role of the 1972 Summit Series in persisting conceptions of Canadian self-identification. In doing so, we attempt to critically contribute to the existing body of scholarship regarding the summit series. Our project seeks to create a new approach to this seminal event in Canadian sport history by assembling a concert of voices through diverse forms of criticism or storytelling modes.

Events occurring in Halifax around that time include the Women’s World Hockey Championships, the North American Indigenous Games, and the opening of the new ice rink on campus, the Dauphinee Centre.

Syftet med avhandlingen är att jämföra och förklara utvecklingen av svensk och finsk herrelitishockey sedan 1970-talets mitt ur organisatoriska, ekonomiska och juridiska perspektiv samt utifrån de idrottsliga ideal och influenser som nordamerikanska NHL och ryska KHL representerar. Backmans idrottsvetenskapliga bidrag är att belysa den nordiska elitishockeyns moderniserings- och amerikaniseringsprocess.
