The proposed special issue intends to explore the varied significances of the Euro Cup as a sports mega event (SME) in terms of national and transnational projections in the twenty-first century. The plan is to highlight and assess the new dimensions of the tournament in the new century in terms of hosting, participation, impact and legacy through the lens of national and transnational assertions, conflicts, and interactions.

Soccer & Society is the first international journal devoted to the game of soccer, aims to focus on the game in the context of a more global world.

Conceived during an interdisciplinary project built in collaboration between the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Université de Lausanne (UNIL), which focused on professionalisation processes in Belgium and Switzerland, our ambition with this conference is to capture the varieties of football professionalisation across Europe, or rather all the several processes often mixed behind or beyond the word and the multiple definitions of “professionalisation”.

Mads Skauge is a PhD candidate in sociology at Nord University (Bodø). His doctoral thesis deals with social inequality in Norwegian youth participation and activity in organized sports and at commercial gyms. His research interests and fields of expertise are mainly within sports sociology, social inequality, youth, sports, fitness, public health, sports politics, e-sports, talent selection, football and quantitative methods.

It is universally recognized that young football players are particularly vulnerable and deserve protection. Agents play a central role in assisting and protecting young players, which also places a special burden on agents working with young players. The event seeks to bring together football stakeholders and interested parties to discuss risks, problems, and solutions.
