This seminar investigates football’s role in discourses on culture, history, and politics in connection to topics such as aesthetics, gender roles, disability, religion, class, economics, and collective identities. We are particularly interested in applications from a broad range of disciplines and perspectives related to football. We also encourage proposals from participants at all career stages.

Public defence of doctoral thesis | “We can make new history here”: Rituals of producing history in Swedish football clubs | Katarzyna Herd, Lund University

This dissertation investigates how history is produced, what roles it plays, and what forms it takes in four Swedish football clubs – AIK, Djurgårdens IF, Helsingborgs IF and Malmö FF. The overreaching aim is to describe and analyse how history is produced and performed in football clubs, and the implications this development has for football and for the understanding of history.

Sport Scholar Profile | Søren Bennike, Danish Football Association

Dr. Søren Bennike was until quite recently a Post-Doctoral researcher and lecturer at the 'Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports' at the University of Copenhagen. He taught the courses 'sport in the welfare society' and 'the organisation of sport – in theory and practice'. He is now working at the Danish Football Association as Project Lead of Research & Knowledge.

Some people are beginning the process of putting together a proposal to publish two edited book collections on The Football Collectives annual conference in Limerick, 2017. (1) Football and Politics, deals with football and Politics / the politics of football, while (2) Football and Popular Culture deals primarily with representations of football in popular culture/football as a facet of popular culture.

Focusing on participation and inclusion in global sports from a historical and modern-day perspective, we look to better understand how and why certain types of people are allowed to participate and others are not. We will expand beyond soccer/football into a cross-section of sports and focus on what is being done to address these inequalities.
