In recent years, the increasing fragmentation of the international system casts further complexity and uncertainty on international  sport, calling for renewed scholarly attention and inquiry. Against this backdrop, we invite scholars of sport as a social phenomenon and institution – historians, sociologists, political scientists, International Relations and Media and  Communications scholars – to submit proposals addressing the multifaceted nexus between  sport and international politics.

With the advent of emerging Web 3.0, researchers now have the opportunity to (re)conceptualize, (re)examine, and (re)reconfigure existing and new constructs, theories, propositions, and models, as well as the way sports businesses are managed and operated. It also allows us to reflect on past ontologies, terminologies, assumptions, and research results as we move forward. In light of this, this special issue seeks to publish innovative research that addresses sport business challenges and opportunities in the context of Web 3.0.

Call for Papers | Frontiers Research Topic: “The impact of COVID-19 on Social Inequalities in Sport and Physical Activity”. Call ends November 1, 2022

The goal of the collection is to bring together research that explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nature and extent of the social inequalities that exist in sport and physical activity settings. Such research can identify specific problems that need to be addressed by organisations and practitioners involved in promoting physical activity to social groups both in-person and online who have historically low participation levels and those who have been particularly effected by the pandemic social conditions.

Previous scientific findings reinforce the importance of traditional sporting games (TSGs) in fostering experiences of integral well-being or multimodal learning (emotional, relational, or decisional). TSGs, such as ball games, skittles games, team games (dodge ball, fox, chicken, snake, cops and robbers) and tag games are also an excellent resource for PE teachers. We expect to receive manuscripts based on the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) classification in order to find common tactical principles.

The aim of this special issue isto provide a holistic overview on where sport and social media research has been (reflections) and where it may be headed in the future. Specifically, what has social media and sport scholarship contributed in the past decade+, and what are the implications for sport and social media in coming years? For this special issue on social media, we also welcome papers that examine gaming and virtual-reality platforms.

We encourage submissions from early career researchers as well as established researchers. Please note that the Nordic arena is not an exclusionary geography for the papers to be considered. Furthermore, contributors should keep in mind that organised sport for youth is in focus of this special issue, which does not of course exclude that attention can be given among others to children’s rights. We prefer submissions that take an interdisciplinary approach and include attention both to minority and majority youth.

This special issue primarily aims to publish socio-ecological research in sport science. Research investigating interactions between humans and their natural environment, including the link between sport and climate change, planetary health, education for sustainable development, sustainable behavior, sustainable management strategies, civic engagement or political strategies in the sport and physical activity context are highly welcome.

The articles are expected to provide guidance that will be valuable to practitioners who are involved with professional teams as well as to those who have interests in working at the professional level.
