Sport & Society Research Network is brought together around a common interest in cultural, political, and economic relationships of sport to society. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. As a Research Network, we are defined by our scope and concerns and motivated to build strategies for action framed by our shared themes and tensions. You can become a participant by submitting a presentation to our annual conference, a research article to one of our journals, or a book proposal to our imprint.

Within the interrelated disciplines of leisure, sport, tourism and events, concerns regarding social and spatial justice have become increasingly significant for researchers and practitioners. The global pandemic, the climate crisis and anthropogenic processes of climate change, economic challenges and uncertainties, the availability and quality of employment, and the health and well-being of our communities, have intensified social, environmental, political and economic inequalities. The conference provides opportunities for researchers and practitioners to examine a range of social and spatial justice issues.

Abstracts are welcome on any area of philosophy of sport (broadly construed), including metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, and ethics, and from any theoretical approach, including analytic philosophy and critical theory. While IAPS recognizes, values, and encourages interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies, acceptance is contingent on the philosophical content of the project. Emerging scholars are encouraged to submit works in progress. You may also submit suggestions for roundtable discussions or workshops.

In today’s evolving sports landscape, the need for equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) remains crucial. This conference focuses on examining EDI in sports, with a renewed emphasis on gender and sustainability. Our goal is to challenge and disrupt existing norms in the sports industry while exploring the intersection of EDI, gender dynamics, and sustainability. We aim to unravel complexities and pave the way for transformative change within the sports arena.

Since 2016, the triennial Global Congress on Sport and Christianity (GCSC) has provided an interdisciplinary and collaborative space for meaningful exploration of sport and Christianity among scholars and practitioners. The Program Committee for the fourth GCSC seeks to continue the conversation. We invite proposals featuring research, scholarship, and/or reflection on sport and Christianity, in all of its forms. Proposals are welcome from all backgrounds and communities, with the hope that our gathering can be a truly global and diverse meeting:

In Africa, political power as well as the influence of non-state groups and corporations (national and international) in decision-making, have the potential of abusing their prerogatives, thus compromising ethical values such as probity, fair play, respect for others and the rules, solidarity and honor, leading to blatant inequalities and corruption that benefit particular interests. Doping is a significant phenomenon, despite control efforts. Both legal and illegal betting can lead to the manipulation of competitions and threaten sports integrity.

The human body is the center of all physical activity, and since prehistoric times, individuals have engaged with and understood their bodies in various ways. Humans have utilized their bodies for movement, social interaction, competition, and the construction of personal identity. Throughout history, the perception and representation of the body have evolved, influenced by a multitude of social, economic, political, and cultural changes. In the context of physical education and sport, the body represents not only biological functions and individual performance but also encompasses broader dimensions of identity and expression.

The convergence of outdoor sports with sustainable development represents one of the most promising frontiers in contemporary sports science and practice. As we prepare to host the ICOS+ International Congress of Outdoor Sports at the Sport Sciences School of Rio Maior – Santarém Polytechnic University in June 2025, we are dedicated to explore this dynamic intersection that holds tremendous potential for economic growth, social cohesion, and environmental stewardship.
