Call for Abstracts | The Speculative Body: Race, Gender and Sexuality in the Televisual Imagination | Call ends October 15, 2018

We understand “body” in a broad sense, both encompassing but also expanding outside of the (presumed) domains of gender, race, and sexuality to question and destabilize the boundaries of both the human and the national “body”. All disciplines are welcome, but writers must anchor their analysis in a televisual story accessible to US audiences.

Despite its importance for the development of sport, sport innovation has not received the scholarly attention it deserves. As a research field, sport innovation is still new and relatively under-developed.

Some people are beginning the process of putting together a proposal to publish two edited book collections on The Football Collectives annual conference in Limerick, 2017. (1) Football and Politics, deals with football and Politics / the politics of football, while (2) Football and Popular Culture deals primarily with representations of football in popular culture/football as a facet of popular culture.

With a strong understanding of what causes and influences rivalry, and how it impacts sport fans, this book seeks to answer additional questions regarding the phenomenon while presenting new areas of research that can help guide inquiry into the subject.  We seek high- quality original research and academic commentary chapters that will reach this end.

This book project began as a cross-disciplinary conversation – theatre, performance studies, anthropology – presented first in a panel at a 2017 conference. The editors wish now to expand the field to allow a wider range of perspectives and voices to weigh in on the question of how professional wrestling might be implicated in the current resurgence of populist politics.

We seek pieces that look at the shifting importance of the coach culturally, that examine representations within various forms of media, and that reflect on inequalities within the coaching profession. In total, this collection seeks pieces that look at the cultural importance of coaches not simply on the field and inside sporting arenas but within the larger cultural, political, and sociological landscapes.

The anthology Sport, Film and National Culture will be the first major single volume collection to survey the significance and interaction of these three prominent cultural forces internationally, through in-depth case-studies of the historical and contemporaneous relationship between sport, film and national culture; interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives are welcome.

The aim of the edited collection is to bring together academics who, from a global and multi-disciplinary approach, are researching events and placing them within the context of Turner's theories of Ritual, Flow, Liminality and Performance, to conceptually explore the relationship between events and Turner's work while not avoiding a prescription of application.
