New book gives huge insights and new knowledge about worldwide sporting events and women’s football
The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup: Politics, Representation, and Management, edited and mostly written by Adam Beissel, Verity Postlethwaite, Andrew Grainger and Julie E. Brice, offers a critical examination of the 2023 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Women’s World Cup, being held in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Bente Skogvang is highly appreciative of this contribution to the academic literature on women’s sport, and women’ football in particular.
A special issue presenting a thematically wide-ranging interim status of research on Sámi sport
Idrott, historia & samhälle [Sport, History & Society] is a scientific forum for sports history research. It is primarily a platform for sports historians in Sweden and the rest of the Nordic countries. The 2023 special issue is titled “Ethnic relations in the sporting periphery: historical studies from the North Calotte” ans deals with Sámi sports. Ansgar Molzberger is our reviewer, and he finds the issue important and the articles interesting but would have liked a stronger link between the individual contributions and their categorization in a larger research context.
An exemplary collection that captures the essence and intricacies of Nordic football culture
Mihaly Szerovay and colleagues’ edited collection Football in the Nordic Countries: Practices, Equality and Influence (Routledge) explores football culture, organisation and development in the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden and Norway. To our reviewer Payam Ansari, the anthology offers a rich, multifaceted exploration of football on national, “glocal”, and global levels, making it a valuable addition to the field of sports sociology and a beacon for future research on football.

Women’s football in the U.S. – from a niche sport to the world stage
Rob Goldman’s The Sisterhood: The 99ers and the Rise of U.S. Women’s Soccer (University of Nebraska Press) is the story of the first and second generations of national team players who were the driving force behind the rise of U.S. women’s soccer and who built the foundation for the team’s enduring success. Bente Ovedie Skogvang, legendary football referee and prominent women’s football scholar, finds Goldman’s efforts highly recommendable for a wide readership.
Well-written, comprehensible, and comprehensive study of football’s early history
The checkered history of early football, with its great variety of codes for the game, is thoroughly investigated in Tony Collins’ How Football Began: A Global History of How the World's Football Codes Were Born (Routledge). We know how it went, with Association Football rules ending up the winner, but, according to our reviewer Bente Skogvang, how and why that happened is what Collins’ excellent study is all about. And there is by no means a clearcut answer.
