Introducing the core concepts, issues and debates in the study of gender and sport, Hanya Pielichaty’s Gender, Sport and Society: An Introduction (Routledge) is an accessible textbook for anyone studying or interested in sport. Anna Maria Hellborg concludes that Pielichaty has written a relevant and nuanced introduction to the complex issue of gender and sport, however, she also finds that the overall structure of the book is open to certain objections. For instance, she would have liked to see a more comprehensive tretment of the concept and phenomenon of intersectionality.

Academics in various disciplines are writing about sport. Sport in Society is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary forum for academics to discuss the growing relationship of sport to significant areas of modern life. Much has been written about figure skating jumps over the years, but most of it has focused on technique. Precious little has been written from a historical perspective. In Technical Merit: A History of Figure Skating Jumps, Ryan Stevens does just that, going through the origins of the six jumps that give points in competition. Anna Maria Hellborg is a keen follower of figure skating and enjoyed Stevens’ book; however, being an academic, she wants more, and has suggestions for further studies of figure skating jumps.

SISU Förlags ambitiösa trebandsutgåva Sport Management 1–3, under redaktion av Åsa Bäckström, Karin Book, Bo Carlsson och PG Fahlström, får genomgående positiva omdömen av idrottsforum.orgs recensenter, Søren Bennike som recenserade del 1 i oktober 2019, och Julius Z. Strömberg i föreliggande recension av delarna 2 och 3. Strömberg efterlyser visserligen ett nordiskt perspektiv men ser inte den bristen som ett hinder för att använda böckerna när han lär ut sport management på Norges idrettshøgskole.

Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) was a failed attempt at an American major league for women’s football that played three seasons 2009–2011. Rachel Allison’s award-winning Kicking Center: Gender and the selling of women’s professional soccer (Rutgers University Press) is an effort to identify the causes of the league’s demise. Anna Maria Hellborg has studies the WPS herself, which is evident in her knowledgeable review of Allison’s book.

Den 8 mars 2019 disputerade Anna Maria Hellborg i idrottsvetenskap vid Malmö universitet på avhandlingen ”Godispengar” eller ”överdådig lyx” – om elitidrott, ekonomi och jämställdhet (Bokförlaget idrottsforum.org). Vi bad en av betygsnämndsledamöterna, idrottshistorikern Johnny Wijk, om en recension. I sitt essäliknande bidrag granskar vår recensent Hellborgs resonemang, och han har inte många invändningar.

Syftet med Anna Maria Hellborgs studie är att problematisera och analysera uppfattningen om och konstruktionen av elitidrottsutövares ekonomiska villkor sedda genom en feministisk lins – och specifikt att undersöka och illustrera hur de ekonomiska förutsättningarna skiljer sig åt mellan kvinnor och män som vill investera i en elitidrottskarriär.

2017 års SVEBI-konferens arrangerades av Högskolan Halmstad tillsammans med SVEBI, SIPF och SNAFA och fick beteckningen Nordisk idrottsvetenskaplig konferens. Every struggle for equality between men and women is hard fought, and at best ends with a victory hard-won. That this is true also in sports is amply demonstrated in Ellen Staurowsky’s edited volume Women and Sport: Continuing a Journey of Liberation and Celebration (Human Kinetics).
