The School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University, originally called the School of Physical and Health Education.

The School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University invites all those interested in socio-cultural studies of sport and exercise to join our day conference, held in memory of our colleague Dr. Donald Macintosh.

The programme will consist of several sessions of graduate student presentations, a catered lunch, and the annual Donald Macintosh Memorial Lecture, which will be given this year by Dr. Danielle Peers. Dr. Peers is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, University of Alberta, and holds the Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Disability and Movement Cultures. As a CRC, Peers led a research study examining available information online on athletes with disabilities. Their findings found an overall lack of accessible information on websites after examining the construction of para-athletes within 127 national and provincial-level sport organizations, as well as a number of the nation’s elite clubs. Following the studies publication, Peers was also granted tenure and promoted to the rank of associate professor. As a queer, non-binary, disabled dance and film artist, Peers has created and toured nine films internationally, and co-choreographed and performed dance works across North America.

This special conference is held annually in memory of Dr. Donald deFrayne Macintosh who passed away in 1994. He was a faculty member in the School of Kinseiology and Health Studies (formerly School of Physical and Health Education), from 1965 to 1994. He was appointed Director in 1965 and provided exceptional leadership for sixteen years before returning to teaching and research. Friends and colleagues at Queen’s created a special fund to honour Dr. Macintosh, called the Donald Macintosh Memorial Visiting Scholar Fund, which is used to bring prominent scholars in the field of sociology of sport or sport policy to Queen’s University to provide the keynote lecture at this one day event.

Graduate students who would like to present their work at the conference should upload a 250-word abstract or a proposal for a roundtable discussion by Saturday, December, 13, 2025. We are looking for works-in-progress, as well as completed research. In selecting papers, priority will be given to students who submit independent research and who are first-time Macintosh presenters; second priority will be given to students who submit research as part of a faculty research team and who are first-time Macintosh presenters; third priority will be given to returning Macintosh presenters.
