Stellenbosch University’s Department of Sport Science in partnership with the Stellenbosch University Museum and Sanlam Archives invites you to a South African Sport Historical Conference to be held from 8 to 11 October 2018 on the theme “Sport, Strength and Society”.

The study of physical culture (with an emphasis on health, strength and beauty) remains an obscure area of research in South Africa. It was through cultural and political efforts that Black South Africa had indirect representation at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. This was when Ron Eland was selected to represent Great Britain in weightlifting after being shunned by the South African Olympic and Empire Games Association.

Eland’s life story reflects the gradual shift from physical culture to the sport of weightlifting. As a reflection of this sportification process, we invite you to deliver a presentation at the second South African Sport Historical Studies Conference that forms part of the Stellenbosch University Centenary Celebrations, which will take place at the Stellenbosch University Museum from 8 to 11 October 2018.

The proceedings will take place in the form of oral and paper presentations that hone in on cultural, social and political displays of the body in society. Colleagues from all over the country and the international community who are active in the creation of sport historical texts, of a varied nature, are invited to submit original abstracts of not more than 250 words by 1 May 2018 on one of the following subthemes relating to sport:

      • Art,
      • Literature,
      • Museums,
