Call for Papers | “Netball Narratives: Local, National and Global Histories” | Special Issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport. Call ends September 4, 2020

Special Issue Editors:

Despite its enormous popularity as a grassroots participant sport, the ongoing development of national ‘Super Leagues’, and the regular cycle of championships at the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup, academic studies exploring the history of netball are relatively scarce. Also rare are works that attempt to explore the game in a global context.

The three editors have recently established the Netball History Network, an online community of scholars with an interest in the history of netball, which was launched during the 2019 Netball World Cup. Our intention is to create a special issue that spans a variety of aspects related to the history of the sport around the globe by means of papers that examine the development of netball at individual, club, local, state, county or international level in diverse regions.

Possible perspectives or themes that could be addressed in an historical framework include:

      • Biography
      • Culture
      • Gender
      • Heritage
      • Management
      • Media
      • Nationalism
      • Politics
      • Race

It is expected that all papers will adopt an appropriate historical and/or biographical methodology. Submissions with a strong heritage focus or that draw on a wide array of primary sources are especially welcome.

Submission Instructions

  • The paper should not exceed a maximum of 10,000 words, including references.
  • Please nominate ‘Netball Narratives’ as the preferred special issue destination for the paper when submitting details via ScholarOne.
  • Please note that all submissions will be subject to double-blind peer-review and must strictly adhere to the journal’s style guide.
