Allan Grønkjær’s PhD study examines the management and leadership of high-performance organisations in elite sport. He works from a conceptual framework of multi-level leadership. This approach acknowledges the variation of different influences, which a leader, e.g., a high-performance director, experiences in the short term (everyday work life) and in the long term (creating and implementing strategy). There is a clear focus on how the context of sport affects leadership.

The goal of this special issue is to foster scholarship that explores strategies for empowering next-generation sport employees to thrive, enhance performance in VUCA environments, and achieve personal fulfillment through their careers in the sport industry.

Our aim is to study the origins and evolution of professional football clubs from a management and organizational history approach. Studying the football industry from a business history perspective is not just relevant and important, but also allows participation in several of the debates open in business and economics fields, including the role played by consumers in the shaping and evolution of an industry; the evolution of an industry toward a structure with an ‘economics of superstars’ character and its consequences, and more.

In this session, we aim at finding out more about the role of sport organisations for creating a sustainable future. We invite contributors to submit abstracts from research in sports within various contexts. Contributions applying various perspectives in the research on social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability are welcome. Contributions can be submitted in a Scandinavian language and English. The session managers are open to host the track in both languages.
