In Heather L. Dichter’s edited volume Soccer Diplomacy: International Relations and Football since 1914 (Univerity Press of Kentucky) an international group of experts analyzes the relationship between soccer and diplomacy. We handed the book to Kristian Gerner, professor of history at Lund University and our expert reviewer in sport and international relations. He found that the book offers readable analyses of soccer as an instrument of diplomacy, but questions the use and understanding of the chosen terminology.

Into their seventh month of pandemic isolation, lisahunter delivers a stimulating review of Critical Research in Sport, Health and Physical Education: How to make a difference (Routledge), a collected volume edited by Richard Pringle, Håkan Larsson & Göran Gerdin, and featuring a notable clutch of contributors. ’Critical’ is the dominating perspective in the anthology, and in the review lisahunter presents its own critical analysis of the criticality of the ’Criticals’.

Fifty-five years after the original publication of C. L. R. James’s influential work comes Marxism, Colonialism, and Cricket: C. L. R. James’s Beyond a Boundary, edited by David Featherstone, Christopher Gair, Christian Høgsbjerg & Andrew Smith (Duke University Press). Our appreciative reviewer Russell Holden suggests that the two volumes will benefit from being read as companions.

Jonny Hjelm har läst antologin Women, Soccer and Transnational Migration (Routledge), sammanställd av Sine Agergaard och Nina Clara Tiesler. Hans kunniga och kritiska recension påvisar förvisso smärre brister, men totalt sett är detta en bok som innehåller mycket och viktig information på ett ganska blygsamt omfång.

To Anne Tjønndal, woman and boxer, Global Perspectives on Women in Combat Sports: Women Warriors around the World, edited by Alex Channon & Christopher R. Matthews (Palgrave Macmillan), was a satisfying read – a valuable contribution to the field of gender and sports.
