Papers may focus on individuals, teams, or deal with themes that address sports and race in relation to: community, nation, and identity; social justice; gender and class; region; sport as a manifestation of cultural practices. It may focus on local amateur, grassroots, or elite play, and cover local, regional or international activities.

Athlete as a National Symbol: Nationalism, Sport, and Social Justice, a volume to be edited by Nicholas Villanueva, Jr., Ph.D., Director of Critical Sports Studies, University of Colorado, Boulder. Contributions of particular interest will focus on athletes and social justice. Proposals are due November 1, 2016.

What is it about culture and society that creates an environment in which an athlete is able to excel or fail in his/her respective sport? Which factors, such as racism, discrimination, financial advantage or hardship, propel or hinder an athlete’s achievements? This volume seeks to explore how the world of sports is often a microcosm of the real world and the many ways in which it uniquely reflects cultural and societal issues.

What is the nature and extent of discrimination in sport today? How does it affect people’s experience of sport and their wider lives? What are the barriers to change? And how can discrimination best be tackled in the future? We welcome proposals from academics, postgraduates and policy makers, who wish to present papers making empirical, theoretical or personal contributions.

Abstracts are invited – either for individual submissions or for complete panels (3/4 papers) – for papers that address aspects of race, ethnicity and migration in relation to all aspects of sport and physical culture. Theoretical or empirical presentations are welcomed, while contributions may draw on contemporary or historical perspectives.

We are seeking contributors to our project, an edited volume of essays examining various aspects of professional wrestling and its relationship to other themes (nationalism, gender, race, etc.). The scope is broad and open, and authors are welcome to write about any individual, period, or location.
