The Oxford Handbook of Sport and Society, edited by Lawrence A, Wenner (Oxford UP), features leading international scholars’ assessments of scholarly inquiry about sport and society. Divided into six sections, chapters consider dominant issues within key areas, approaches featured in inquiry, and debates needing resolution. Our reviewer is Richards Giulianotti, who edited the Sage four volume set The Sociology of Sport in 2012, and he finds that this new collection, some unnecessary omissions notwithstanding, is a welcome addition to the existing list of handbooks in the field.

Arguably, trans people are subject to discrimination, or worse. Whether or not they are also, as trans athletes, discriminated in sports is a moot point. In a new edited collection, Justice for Trans Athletes: Challenges and Struggles by Ali Durham Greey & Helen Jefferson Lenskyj (Emerald), the contributors argue for full inclusion of transwomen athletes in the female category of competitive sports. Feminist New Materialisms, Sport and Fitness: A Lively Entanglement by Holly Thorpe, Julie Brice & Marianne Clark (Palgrave Macmillan) offers the first critical examination of the contributions of feminist new materialist thought to the study of sport, fitness, and physical culture. We asked Pam R. Sailors, Professor of Philosophy at Missouri State University to read it, and her review bears witness to the complexities dealt with in the book; still, she writes, a good addition to discussions in the area.
