Qualitative research in sport and exercise is firmly established and continues to expand at a rapid pace. It is increasingly celebrated for what it can offer within and beyond the academy in terms of understanding people’s perceptions, experiences, and meanings that they attribute to sport, physical activity, exercise and leisure. ​This conference is dedicated to promoting cutting edge empirical inquiry, advancements in qualitative methods, and debates about methods, theory, and practice and as they relate to conducting and learning from qualitative research in sport and exercise. 

Qualitative research in sport and exercise is growing. It is also increasingly celebrated for what it can offer academics, students, practitioners. This conference is dedicated to promoting empirical inquiry, advancements in qualitative methods and debates about methodology, theory, presentation and practice.

To encourage a discussion on what ethnography can do for sport (and sport scholarship for ethnography) in the age of uncertainty and distrust, we invite contributions from different fields of sports research and of diverse ethnographic perspectives, pertaining to whether sport can restore and/or uphold its integrity and remain a source of wonder and solace in the face of its present challenges.

In 2017 the ethnography symposium takes as its theme the question of politics and ethnography in “an age of uncertainty”. We invite you to join us in Manchester for the 12th International Ethnography Symposium. For the first time the conference is hosting a series of specialist streams that address the theme of politics from a variety of perspectives and disciplines.

The goal of this workshop is to generate and extend conversations about digital scholarship, especially in relationship to the historical study of sport and related realms including recreation, games, physical activity, and the moving body.
