Sport in Society, Volume 27, 2024, Issue 12 | Professionalisation of sport coaching from a Scandinavian horizon
Academics in various disciplines are writing about sport. Sport in Society is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary forum for academics to discuss the growing relationship of sport to significant areas of modern life. The Forum Editor’s pick from the current issue: Coaching by doing: communities of practice at Swedish sport schools in XC skiing since the 1970s by Daniel Svensson (open access).
Starting at the root: An interrogation of performance above all else logic in sport as we overshoot planetary boundaries
In Sport, Performance and Sustainability, an open access volume edited by Svensson, Backman, Hedenborg & Sörlin (Routledge), the authors examine the logic of ‘faster, higher, and stronger’ and the technoscientific revolution behind the tremendous growth in sport performance over the last 100 years. Our reviewer Benjamin Mole commends the choice of Guttmann’s sportification concept as the starting point and finds much in the analyses to appreciate. Some critical observations notwithstanding, he hails the book for moving the discussion of sporting logics forward.
A collection of engaging narratives describing social injustices in sports
Facing Social Justice in Sports, an edited volume by Adam J. Kuban (The Facing Project Press) follows the lives of over 20 athletes, coaches, and sports-media professionals in different stages of their careers, capturing their lived experiences and the defining moments that propelled them to advocate for change. Bo Carlsson’s review reveals the collection of narratives that are engaging as well as interesting; the interviews certainly provide the empirical basis for further analyses.

Soccer, a.k.a (association) football is the most popular mass spectator sport in the world. The Forum Editor’s pick from the current issue: Zlatan Ibrahimović: a monument and a mirror of his times(b> by Roger Johansson, Per-Markku Ristilammi & Helena Tolvhed (open access).
New study describes, analyses and explains abuse towards match officials
In Referees, Match Officials and Abuse: Research and Implications for Policy (Routledge), authors Tom Webb, Mike Rayner, Jamie Cleland & Jimmy O’Gorman explore issues related to the abuse of referees and match officials in sport, based on original empirical research. Our reviewer is idrottsforum.org founder Bo Carlsson, who gained insights from the chapters describing and analyzing the problem while remaining slightly skeptical about the proposed measures.
Sport in Society, Volume 25, 2022, Issue 6 | Sport, Dominance, Hegemonic Culture and Rebellion
Academics in various disciplines are writing about sport. Sport in Society is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary forum for academics to discuss the growing relationship of sport to significant areas of modern life. The Forum Editor’s pick from the current issue: What’s at play? Power, transnational coaches and the global hegemony of performance within Danish elite swimming by Jørgen Bagger Kjær & Sine Agergaard.
A true pleasure for historians and hockey lovers, less so for critical sociologists
Played on frozen ponds in cold northern lands, hockey seemed an especially unlikely game to gain a global following. Bruce Berglund’s The Fastest Game in the World (University of California Press) is a global history of a global sport, drawing upon research conducted around the world. Bo Carlsson, sport sociology professor who favors ice hockey over other sports, found a well-written av enjoyable history of hockey, but he sorely misses the critical sociological gaze.
Sport in Society, Volume 23, 2020, Issue 3 | The Progress of Elite Ice Hockey, Beyond NHL: A Focus on (G)local culture(s), Migration, Entrepreneurship, Americanization and Oligarchism
The considerable growth of interest in commerce, media and politics and their relationship to sport in international academia has resulted in academics in various disciplines writing about sport. Sport in Society is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary forum for academics to discuss the growing relationship of sport to significant areas of modern life. Editor’s pick from the current issue: BANDY V. ICE HOCKEY IN SWEDEN by Torbjörn Andersson.
