Contracts play a crucial role in the world of sport, particularly long-term contracts. Contractual agreements form the foundation of transnational sports governance, sports governing bodies are all formally the product of a specific time of contract (be it in the form of an association or corporation) often justifying the autonomy of sport and its private governance at a (more or less far) distance from the state. This workshop proposes to explore the role of long-term contracts in sport and their characteristics through a variety of theoretical and methodological lenses.

Special Collection Available Now, Open Access | From Superleague to ISU: How the Court of Justice of the European Union Reshaped/Renewed the Relationship between EU law and Sport

On 21 December 2023, the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice of the European Union handed down its judgments in three key sports law cases. Between them, these three decisions will shape the application of EU competitional law, the freedom of movement, and Article 165 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union to sport. The purpose of this collection is to provide critical insight into the ways that these decisions will impact on the governance of sport, players’ contracts, the specificity of sport, and the potential for breakaway or unauthorised competitions to disrupt the European Model of Sport.

The, one, or the one legacy of Bosman?

The Bosman judgment is considered from a number of angles in the anthology The Legacy of Bosman: Revisiting the Relationship between EU Law and Sport edited by Antoine Duval & Ben Van Rompuy (TMC Asser Press). Our reviewer Mikael Hansson finds valuable contributions as well as less so, and would perhaps have liked a slightly counterfactual approach as well.
