New book explores the sport-health ideology

Dominic Malcolm, sociologist at Loughborough University, UK with an impressive list of books and articles to his name, takes a critical look at modern sports medicin in Sport, Medicine and Health: The Medicalization of Sport? (Routledge). Anne Tjønndal has read Malcolm’s “solid piece of scientific work”, and she found the chapter on concussions in sports of particular interest.

New book on general coaching, of some interest for sports coaches

Reinhard Stelter, sport psychology professor at University of Copenhagen’s Dept. of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, develops his coaching ideas in The Art of the Dialogue in Coaching: Towards Transformative Exchange (Routledge). Anne Tjønndal finds few references to sports, but she thinks nonetheless that the book can be a useful tool for sports coaches.

A story of African Americans fighting for social recognition – in the ring

In his book I fight for a Living: Boxing and the battle for black manhood 1880–1915 (University of Illinois Press), Louis Moore draws on the fact that boxing was one of the few trades where an African American man could win renown. Though Anne Tjønndal, academic, boxer, and reviewer, finds it hard to keep track of all the boxers and their matches, she appreciates the sociological observations throughout the book.

Anne Tjønndal reviews an edited volume from Palgrave Macmillan, Sport and Social Entrepreneurship in Sweden by Tomas Peterson & Katarina Schenker. Our reviewer hails the study as an important contribution to the scholarly field of social innovation and entrepreneurship in sport, but she has serious misgivings about some of the concluding theses.

Hvert case utgjør en artikkel i avhandlingen.
