Distinguished American sport sociologist Jay Coakley, Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, is the author of several books and numerous articles. His Sports in Society: Issues and Controversies from 1994 is a central sport studies textbook, now in its 11th edition (March 2014).
In his revisions of Sports in Society for each new edition, Jay has compiled an impressive bibliography, now updated to contain no less than 5,683 references, in which it is possible to do basic word searches of titles, or authors’ last names.
Jay har generously decided to share his bibliography with the international sport studies community, and below is a link to the bibliography in the pdf format for free download.
Everyone and anyone may use and share this in whatever way is useful, including to students who may find it useful when doing their research and writing papers. Please observe the Creative Commons requirement under which the bibliography is made public.
The bibliography is selective (related to topics in Sports in Society) and not inclusive of references from all journals we use in the field, although many of the articles in the three major sociology of sport journals are included.
If anyone have lists of references that could be combined with this list to make it less selective, do send them to Jay Coakley for inclusion in the next edition of the bibliography.
