    Review Article

In May 2023 news agency’s revealed that NZ rugby league ‘super coach’ Wayne Bennett had ‘struggled’ with the pronunciation of one of his athletes’ names. The athlete, Valynce Te Whare, was then subjected to having his name and identity erased when the coach referred to him as Val Smith. “I’ve had to rename him. There’s no way you can get that surname out in one mouthful, so he is known as Val Smith around here”. (Image made available under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication)
