The School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University invites all those interested in socio-cultural studies of sport and exercise to join our day conference, held in the memory of our colleague Dr. Donald Macintosh.
The programme will consist of several sessions of graduate student presentations, a catered lunch, and the annual Donald Macintosh Memorial Lecture, which will be given this year by Dr. Ornella Nzindukiyimana. Dr. Nzindukiyimana is Associate Professor in the Department of Human Kinetics at St. Francis Xavier University where she primarily teaches the historical foundations of sport and physical culture in Canada. Her socio-historical studies span sporting accounts of girls and women in Southern Ontario in the early 20th century to the contextualization of the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 National Basketball Association championship run. She has documented obscured histories in boxing, track and field, swimming, and baseball. She is developing more histories in those spaces and exploring surfing, basketball, and hockey, with particular interest in individuals and groups who challenged colonial, White supremacist, patriarchal, and capitalist forces in sport, who expanded what sport could be, and who inform a template for reimagining sport’s structure.
Graduate students who would like to present their work at the conference should upload a 250-word abstract or a proposal for a roundtable discussion by Monday, December, 11, 2023. We are looking for works-in-progress, as well as completed research. In selecting papers, priority will be given to students who submit independent research and who are first-time Macintosh presenters; second priority will be given to students who submit research as part of a faculty research team and who are first-time Macintosh presenters; third priority will be given to returning Macintosh presenters.
Kingston is accessible by VIA rail or bus. It is a two hour and 45-minute drive from downtown Toronto or downtown Montreal. It is a two-hour drive from Ottawa and a one-hour drive from Watertown, New York. Registration fees are $30 for faculty and $20 for students.

Free masks will be available at the registration desk.
