Dear all,
Welcome to a – hopefully – happy and prosperous new year with idrottsforum.org, although it doesn’t look too good; even as I write these words the news ticker keeps reporting worrying developments in the Greenland affair and other crisis hotspots around the world. Hoping against hope for sensible solutions, we’ll keep doing what we do best, presenting relevant research on sport and society in the forms of articles, news and reviews.
Not much happened on the Forum during the Christmas break, but for the Spring term, starting today, we’re ready in our new editorial offices to start publishing – we have peer review article as well as feature articles and many book reviews in store for you. A good idea, thus, to keep an eye on idrottsforum.org.
Since the last Newsletter, published on December 22, the following items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
We’ve been quite busy in our social media outlets over the holidays, so if you’re not already hooked up to at least one of them, for now they are Facebook, Bluesky, LinkedIn and X, you’re missing quite a lot of information from idrottsforum.org that never appears on the website. So, if that is the case, check out, by clicking on the names, our Facebook, Bluesky, LinkedIn and X accounts.
Have a great week,
Kjell Eriksson

Beyond Bazball: What the Ashes defeat tells us about class in Britain, by Duncan Stone

Despite England’s first Ashes Test victory in Australia since the 2010/11 tour ‘down under’, English cricket – and the playing style known as ‘Bazball’ in particular – has come under increasingly hostile scrutiny. This is nothing new of course. English cricket’s habitual failures when results, as far as public interest is concerned, really matter have long resulted in administrative and journalistic navel-gazing without ever, it seems, getting to the root of the problem. In recent years, this introspection has largely focussed upon racism, following Azeem Rafiq’s campaign for accountability that led to a DCMS enquiry and, ultimately, the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) in 2023, which investigated all forms of discrimination.
