Dear all,
As I hinted in last week’s newsletter, the week that just passed would be considerably less productive in terms of published material than usual. Even so, we managed two highly interesting reviews of two very interesting books on different aspects of football.
Today, Easter Monday, is also a national holiday and thus an editor’s holiday, but from Tuesday on we’ll be back in full swing – or very close to it, anyway.
So, last week the following few items were published on idrottsforum.org (see below; language and publication dates, YYMMDD, in brackets). Click on the red headings to go to content. Utilize the Google Translate service to turn Scandinavian language pages into (some sort of) English.
Have a great week,

Book Reviews
Football in Wind and Rain: The Making of the British Game, by John Williams

John Williams’s latest contribution to the history of football, Football in Wind and Rain: The Making of the British Game (Pitch Publishing), provides educational and entertaining bite-size accounts of the history of British football and its people. Our reviewer, history professor Dilwyn Porter has read the 80 short chapters by this engaging storyteller, each vignette crafted to illuminate an aspect of the game’s history in Britain from the nineteenth century through to the present day, and Williams maintains an impressive momentum throughout. (Review in English, published 250415.)
Football Clubs and the Global Transfer Market, by Thijs A. Velema

Thijs A. Velema, an Associate Professor in Sociology at National Taipei University, has been examining labor markets in professional football from the perspective of football clubs rather than players. In his book Football Clubs and the Global Transfer Market (Routledge) Velema endeavors to develop a sociological theory about football clubs as myopic gamblers playing the transfer market. Jan Andre Lee Ludvigsen has read “an important and ambitious monograph”, “well-written and very clear in its argumentation”. (Review in English, published 250416.)
