What is it about culture and society that creates an environment in which an athlete is able to excel or fail in his/her respective sport? Which factors, such as racism, discrimination, financial advantage or hardship, propel or hinder an athlete’s achievements? This volume seeks to explore how the world of sports is often a microcosm of the real world and the many ways in which it uniquely reflects cultural and societal issues.

Jacquelyn Allen-Collinson is a qualitative sociologist and a graduate of the Universities of Warwick and South Wales. Her principal research interests cohere around the sociology of the body; embodiment and the senses; health and wellbeing; identity and identity work; sociological & feminist phenomenology; autoethnographic & auto-phenomenographic approaches.

Women and Sport is a unique initiative to publish scholarly knowledge about women's sports. The project began back in 2011, and in the fall of 2014, a large number of scientific texts on various aspects of women's sports have been published.
