In Jörg Krieger’s and Stephan Wassong’s edited collection Dark Sides of Sport (Common Ground), leading international scholars explore multifaceted historical and contemporary challenges for sport. We asked Mark Brooke at the National University of Singapore for a review. Our reviewer is very appreciative of the book; it fills a void in the existing academic literature as it explores, in one book, various areas of deviance that pose a threat to sport.

Research on the possible negative impact of sport has been described as ‘dark side’ research. Sporting authorities often shun dark side research because it presents them with a dilemma: conduct research and find a problem or do nothing and there is no problem. There is a growing body of (mainly anecdotal) evidence that prompts the question: is sport the cure, or is it the cause?
A forensic approach to anti-doping
In their recent book Detecting Doping in Sport (Routledge), Stephen Moston and Terry Engelberg are critical of the current anti-doping regime, and argue for the introduction of more stringent methods in the fight against doping. In her review, Anna Qvarfordt considers their arguments and the pros and cons of their recommendations, but remains, on consideration, sceptical.
