    The World Association for Sport Management (WASM) is pleased to announce its fifth conference to be co-hosted by the North-West University and Cape Peninsula University of Technology. It will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, at the Newlands Cricket Ground from 3 to 6 March 2026.     This Research Topic editors Donatella Radogna and Christian Tolstrup Jensen aim to showcase original and innovative research, experiences, and projects demonstrating the potential of sports tourism in promoting sustainable development. This includes defining appropriate practices for repurposing and restoring buildings, optimizing the enjoyment and appreciation of natural environments (particularly in depopulated internal regions), initiating processes of social improvement, and fostering the creation of new local micro-economies.

    The aim of the conference is to bring together academics and researchers of all areas of sports. Participants can present on sports topics within broad streams of research areas. Consistent with the theme of ATINER’s small academic events, all programs may include a few sessions on current topics in education and research. Please note that all our conferences are non-thematic as explained in our policy. However, academic members and friends can take the lead to organize and chair a stream as part of this conference.

    The scope of this special issue is broad, encompassing a wide range of topics that explore the intricate interplay between tourism, hospitality, and the sport industry. We encourage submissions that shed light on diverse sport-related contexts and scenarios, spanning professional, amateur, and youth sports, as well as non-traditional sports like extreme or adventure sports. Case studies may also delve into various sports governing bodies, associations, leagues, sport media, and individual/team sports contexts.
