Recently, criticism against Russian athletes regarding the practices of performance-enhancing drugs (PED) usage, i.e. doping, appeared in international sports institutions. This led a group of sport scholars led by Professor Mikhail Sinyutin to launch a study of the attitudes towards doping in sport among the citizens of Saint Petersburg, Russia.

This paper by three Masters students at Saint Petersburg State University offers a discussion of the theoretical basis of the ethical foundations of sport, expressed in the principles of fair play, with emphasis on the articulation between cultural-moral personhood in sport and the increasingly anti-humanist features of contemporary, institutionalized professional sport (sub-)cultures.
