This thesis adds to our understanding of the importance of environment on people’s experience of walking and active travel
In his thesis Exploring Perceptions of Route Environments in Relation to Walking, Dan Andersson has investigated how different environmental variables, for example greenery, noise and beauty, are perceived by those who commute on foot in Greater Stockholm. We asked landscape historian Sarah Spooner for a review, and her assessment of Andersson’s efforts concludes with the observation that it’s an important piece of research that deserves to be read widely amongst both academics and professionals working in planning, transportation and public health.
Effective and immersive open access volume on the act of walking
In Pathways: Exploring the Routes of a Movement Heritage, editors Daniel Svensson, Katarina Saltzman & Sverker Sörlin will explore possibilities to acknowledge human motion, and traces thereof, as heritage, based on a Swedish research project with the aim to explore the multiple dimensions of walking. We were fortunate that Sarah Spooner readily accepted to assess their efforts, and her knowledgeable review presents a highly readable, thought-provoking and wide-ranging collection of essays.
