Mediapolis thus reinstates Olympism as a central theme, while also demonstrating its plural and interdisciplinary character, As this is the journal’s first foray into such a complex topic, the challenge is to open up and create a space for reflection and discussion on Olympism in its relationship with the media, journalism and communication, preferably based on original and innovative empirical research, and extended to multiple visions and themes that question and reflect on Olympism and its intersections with the media, journalism and communication.

By focusing on the under-researched area of workforce diversity among British sports journalists, this project will (1) provide new and much needed insights into the levels of diversity and inclusion (or lack thereof) at all levels of the industry, (2) explore the challenges and opportunities that sports journalists from minority groups encounter within the industry, and (3) provide insight into senior managers’ understandings of the current state of play.

Over the last year, the Sports Media Identity Network has been working with a range of academics and sports media professionals to identify best practice and recommendations for sports media practitioners, researchers and stakeholders. At this event, which will be held at Northumbria University, London on January 19, 2024, we will be sharing those findings and the resulting recommendations as outlined in our draft report.
