To enhance the small state and Nordic perspective on international sports politics, we are inviting scholars from all disciplines to a workshop at Stockholm University, planned to take place in November 2024. The topic is the relationship between sport and foreign policy in the Nordic Countries during the Cold War. This topic should be understood broadly, both as the efforts of government agencies to use sports to promote their policies, and debates and strategies to handle questions in relation to foreign politics among sports federations and athletes.

Fifty years ago, in 1974, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU} started its jurisprudential activity in the field of sport when it stated that sport, as an economic activity, falls under the scope of EU law. The recent ruling in the case of the Superleague means a new step in consolidating a real sports doctrine by the Court. Considering media noise around the ruling and its political connotation,it is a good opportunity to reflect on the interdependence of media and sport: Can professional sports keep their own identity, or is it going to become a mere sub-category of audiovisual products?

This session is interested in walking further, both in terms of considering the potential of increasing notions of ‘walkable’ and investigating the practices of long(er) distance walking. As such, we welcome papers taking an empirical, theoretical, analytical, conceptual, creative or applied approach to the topic of long-distance walking and walking distance. We also encourage contributions that engage with long-distance walking in varied contexts, including transport, tourism, leisure, sport, spirituality, pilgrimage, urban design, and cultural and literary history.

What is the sport scholar’s role today? Overall, we believe it is necessary to reflect on how scholars of sport and adjacent fields tell what Fields calls “‘good stories’” to the public. We open this workshop to individuals who have gone beyond academic journals to critically examine recreation, sport, and/or leisure through teaching, museums, public policy, activism, new media (podcasts, social media, documentary), or any number of alternatives. Overall, the idea is to reflect, share, and write about their responsibility to the public and their efforts to provide “good stories.”
