    Call for Participation | Post-Olympics Japan: Renewal or Failure? | Online Workshop, October 7–8, 2021

    Two months after the Olympic Games 2021, we would like to hold an online workshop on 7–8 October about the impact of the Games and the gap between original aspirations and concrete results. Therefore, we will have sessions on the following topics: the political economy of Olympics, political communication, historic perspectives, diversity, social movements and voluntarism, technology and innovation, mass media and public discourse. Our panel discussion at the end of the Workshop tackles the question: “What remains?”

    Contributions are being accepted for a workshop and edited volume tentatively titled “Beyond the Five Rings: Religion and Sport in Japan.” The purpose is to bring together experts from a variety of fields including, but not limited to, religious studies, history, sport studies/sports management, sociology, tourism, anthropology, economics, visual/material culture, and political science.

    This special issue of the Journal of Sport and Social Issues asks: how are East Asian networks of lifestyle sport enthusiasts, workers, governing bodies, and associated communities-ecologies forming? What are the politics of the worlds, experiences, values, and imaginaries coming about (or being blocked)? How is such being negotiated by humans and non-humans?

    Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science is an international peer-reviewed journal which publishes original research contributions to scientific knowledge. Articles that adopt a multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary or comparative approach are also welcome. Most of the articles that are published in the journal will be based on qualitative or mixed-method research. However, consideration will be given to quantitative studies which are sufficiently theorised.

    Contemporary Japan (CJ) is the biannual journal of the German Institute for Japanese Studies Tokyo (DIJ) published by de Gruyter, Berlin and New York. We publish original research from all disciplines as they relate to contemporary Japan or its recent historical development. Manuscripts which cross disciplinary boundaries and raise larger issues of interest are also welcome, as are approaches rooted in traditional disciplines...
