A valuable and wide-ranging contribution to the field of sport and cultural studies
Presenting case studies from around the world, including from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, Mariann Vaczi & Alan Bairner’s edited collection Indigenous, Traditional, and Folk Sports: Contesting Modernities draws on multidisciplinary work from sociology, anthropology, history, cultural studies, and political science. Our knowledgeable reviewer Helge Chr. Pedersen finds theoretical ambiguities and inconsistencies, but still concludes that the book is a valuable and wide-ranging contribution to the field of sport and cultural studies.
A special issue presenting a thematically wide-ranging interim status of research on Sámi sport
Idrott, historia & samhälle [Sport, History & Society] is a scientific forum for sports history research. It is primarily a platform for sports historians in Sweden and the rest of the Nordic countries. The 2023 special issue is titled “Ethnic relations in the sporting periphery: historical studies from the North Calotte” ans deals with Sámi sports. Ansgar Molzberger is our reviewer, and he finds the issue important and the articles interesting but would have liked a stronger link between the individual contributions and their categorization in a larger research context.
Propaganda for traditional sports and activities that lack critical reflection and academic scrutiny
Having read Bartosz Prabucki’s Traditional Sports and Games in the Contemporary World: The New Face of Sport? (Cambridge Scholars Publishing) – claimed by the publisher as “a captivating story about traditional sports and games in the current world”, our reviewer Helge Chr. Pedersen has very little to say in favor of the book. He finds the publisher’s failure to provide a guiding editorial hand at fault, as well as the author's lack of depth and critical analysis.

Høy litterær og historiefaglig kvalitet
Vasaloppet 1929 står i centrum i Isak Lidströms senaste bok Heja Persson! Samisk triumf i Vasaloppet (Arx Förlag), och närmare bestämt titelns Persson, loppets vinnare, samen Johan-Abram Persson. Helge Chr. Pedersen, som själv forskar om Norges samer, läser en bok med hög idrottshistorisk nivå och därtill litterära kvaliteter, om än också med vissa litterära friheter.
Identities, Ethnicities, Histories and Sports in Northern Norway
Daniel Svensson has read Utafor sporet? Idrett, identiteter og regionalisme i nord [Off the beaten track: Sports, identity and regionalism in the north] (Oplandske Bokforlag), an anthology edited by Helge Chr. Pedersen och Eivind Å. Skille. Our reviewer is mostly content, but would have liked further comparative efforts.
