In the edited collection Athletics in the Nordic Countries: History and Development, edited by Jörg Krieger, scholars from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden explore historical developments and current phenomena in the sport of athletics. The authors provide insight into sport officials, events, and athletes from the Nordic countries that have shaped the international athletics scene. In his review, Alan Bairner presents the basic features of a book that obliges the reader to think about what this most accessible of sports is and what it could be, for good or ill.

Bringing together leading esports experts from Europe, North America, and Australia, Anne Tjønndal’s edited collection Social Issues in Esports (Routledge) provides new sociological analyses that define and locate esports in social studies. Kalle Jonasson, who wrote about esports on idrottsforum.org already back in 2005, is highly appreciative of Tjønndal’s book, notwithstanding the fact that he would have liked to see a bit more of conceptual and philosophical thinking around the social issues surrounding esports.

Jimmy Sanderson’s Sport, Social Media, and Digital Technology: Sociological Approaches (Emerald Publications) brings together a collection of essays from leading global scholars to illustrate how sociological approaches are imperative to enhancing our understanding of sport and social media and digital technology. A collective of sport sociologists at Nord University, Norway has read the book as a book group, bringing many various experiences and perspectives into a rich review highlighting the book’s strong points as well as its weaknesses.

The collected volume Krop og bevægelse i idræt og sundhed: Kulturanalytiske tilgange [Body and movement in sports and health: Cultural analytical approaches], edited by Susanne Ravn and Signe Højbjerre Larsen (Syddansk Universitetsforlag), offers an introduction to the various forms of cultural analytical traditions that characterize Danish as well as international research environments. Mental health issues among elite sports performers are finally being talked about quite openly; Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka are the latest examples. Mental illness is indeed a thorny issue, and it is being thoroughly scrutinized from the sociological perspective in Michael Atkinson’s edited volume Sport, Mental Illness, and Sociology (Emerald Publishing) by a number of leading sport sociological scholars.
