This special issue seeks to explore the multifaceted ways in which political systems in Global South nations leverage sports beyond their recreational purpose. The focus is on how sports are utilized as strategic tools to achieve national and international policy objectives. By examining the intersection of sports, politics, and society, this issue aims to shed light on the broader implications of this relationship for governance, diplomacy, and social development. 

The Fourteenth International Conference on Sport & Society is brought together around a common interest in cultural, political, and economic relationships of sport to society. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. Our mission is to provide a safe, sustainable, and accessible way for us to come together and interact as a Research Network.

At this year’s conference, we want to focus on exploring strategies to improve health pathways, grounded in the social dimensions and cultural settings of physical activity. This includes the organizational strategies of national and international governing bodies of sport that regulate a large deal of participation in leisure and elite sport on the local, national and international levels.

We invite a wide range of articles, essays, and creative works on various aspects of sport and sports in China that will embrace and carry your work and/or the conference experience into the journal; scholars, researchers, and practitioners across disciplines and drawing upon a wide range of methods are encouraged to submit.
