Considering the historical and contemporary ties between sport and politics, a one-day conference in New York City in December 2018 will take a closer look at these relationships with a focus on four main topics: Exploitation; Environment; Stereotypes; and Scandals. We invite scholars from across the discipline and from any stage of their career to submit proposals.

This book project began as a cross-disciplinary conversation – theatre, performance studies, anthropology – presented first in a panel at a 2017 conference. The editors wish now to expand the field to allow a wider range of perspectives and voices to weigh in on the question of how professional wrestling might be implicated in the current resurgence of populist politics.

We are seeking contributions to a workshop that will examine the political life of the canoe in all of its diverse forms. While much critical scholarship on the canoe has offered a critique of its hegemonic position, we also hope to highlight how the canoe has been used to resist and redraw relationships of power.
