    Call for Papers | “Transgressing Boundaries: Migration and Sport”, a SiNAFE Conference | March 3-4, 2023, at Istanbul Bilgi University. Call ends January 31, 2023 

    In this project, we try to preserve a simple but crucial idea: having equal conditions in sports is a human right. With the idea that “sport is a human right,” the project wants to promote social inclusion and help make sure that everyone has equal opportunities in sports, with a particular focus on migrants. Sport is oftentimes cited as the perfect tool for upward mobility, and many young athletes attach their hopes and dreams to sport, particularly football, to ascend socially. Still, migrant athletes continue to suffer from social exclusion.

    At the Department of Sport Sciences, the contribution of sport to society is studied on the basis of problem complexes such as sport regulation and normativity, state, market and civil society relation to sport, sport’s own selection mechanisms, space and place, as well as the way societal structures and social categories, such as gender, ethnicity, sexuality, dis/ability, generation and social class, affect and are affected by sport and within the school subject (PE).

    The editors seek manuscripts that critically engage issues related to football/soccer and diaspora. This may include topics that heighten our understanding of: (a) migration, acculturation, and assimilation; (b) sport, identity, and representation; (c) the construction and accomplishment of nationality; (d) sport and football fandom; (e) and nationhood, citizenship, and politics. We welcome cross-disciplinary research from anthropological, communication, cultural, historical, psychological, political and sociological perspectives.

    Today sport is a significant social arena through which we can study the evolvement of societal diversity, along with the challenges that follow suit. This special issue turns attention to such diversity in both the role sports may play in the lives of migrants and their descendants, but also to a variety in their societal reception, including political strategies as well as civic responses that shape options for migrants’ sports participation.

    The main aim of this special issue is to bring scholars, researchers, educators, students, professionals and other groups interested in sports and physical activity to propose their works.     The workshop will highlight issues and subjects related to integration, migration and multiculturalism. In this matter, sport is expected to play a significant part in relation to migration, culture and integration. Consequently, the proposed theme of the workshop is related to the present European situation, with a considerable amount of immigrants and refuges.
