Progressive and broad-ranging, The Routledge Handbook of Gender Politics in Sport and Physical Activity edited by Győző Molnár and Rachael Bullingham, offers a comprehensive overview of the complex intersections between politics, gender, sport and physical activity. In her thorough, competent and highly useful review of this 32 chapters anthology, Anna Sätre highlights the underlying aims of the collection, some detectable trends among the contributions, and several of the chapters that stand out for their critical and innovative approaches.

Sport is increasingly being described as a complex system. Systems Thinking Methods in Sport: Practical Guidance and Case Study Applications by Scott McLean and colleagues (Routledge) presents a practical guide to applying contemporary systems thinking methods in sport as well as case study applications demonstrating how their outputs can be translated in practice. Kati Lehtonen finds valuable methodological insights into the field of sports research that fulfills the authors’ promises to provide not just theoretical insights but also practical guidance of systems thinking.

Idrott, historia & samhälle [Sport, History & Society] is a scientific forum for sports history research. It is primarily a platform for sports historians in Sweden and the rest of the Nordic countries. The 2023 special issue is titled “Ethnic relations in the sporting periphery: historical studies from the North Calotte” ans deals with Sámi sports. Ansgar Molzberger is our reviewer, and he finds the issue important and the articles interesting but would have liked a stronger link between the individual contributions and their categorization in a larger research context.

Our reviewer is Joe Piggin. He has been physically active in almost all Nordic countries – and he quite likes this book.
