    John T. Wendt serves as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Ethics and Business Law at the University of St Thomas.  He holds a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts, Summa Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota and a Juris Doctorate from William Mitchell College of Law.  His research focuses on sports law, risk management, and the use of performance enhancing drugs.  He is also a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Lausanne, Switzerland).

    From Top Hats to Helmets: The Accident that Changed Dressage

    Next Saturday, July 24, 2021, the four-day dressage event of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo will commence, with the usual pomp and excitement. However, one thing will have changed since the Rio Olympics in 2016. The riders in the dressage event will all wear safety helmets rather than top hats. In this article, John T. Wendt recounts the development starting with equestrian Courtney King-Dye’s accident in 2010, and ending with the decision to make safety helmets mandatory from January 1, 2021.
